FAQ

Why does ISO 9 use letters like š and ŝ?

ISO 9 distinguishes Cyrillic letters using Latin letters with diacritics: ш becomes š, щ becomes ŝ, ю becomes û and я becomes â. These distinct mappings allow reverse conversion.

Can I convert any Latin text back to Cyrillic?

Reverse conversion supports ISO 9 text only, not BGN/PCGN, GOST, passport or slug results. Ordinary Latin words are converted too, so separate them from ISO 9 text if you want to keep them unchanged; q, w and x stay as typed because they have no ISO 9 equivalent.

Can I use this for Ukrainian passport names?

Not with Ukrainian rules. Passport (ICAO 9303) uses one Russian passport table, not Ukrainian national passport rules, and Language does not affect it. Ukrainian is available only for BGN/PCGN, GOST and the URL slug.

What files can I upload?

Use Upload for plain-text files up to 50 MB, including .txt, .csv and .md files. Binary files are rejected.

Is my text uploaded or saved?

Your text is processed in your browser, is not uploaded and is not saved. Only Direction, Standard and Language are saved locally; site analytics receives usage events, never your text.
