FAQ
Why do accented letters and emoji take more than 8 bits?
The tool uses UTF-8: ASCII characters take one byte, é takes two, and an emoji such as a smiley face takes four. Open Character breakdown to inspect each character’s code point and binary bytes.
Why does my binary input need exactly 8 bits per group?
Each group represents one byte, so it must contain exactly eight bits, including leading zeros. The tool does not pad or shorten groups; a continuous bit string is accepted if its length is a multiple of eight.
Why does valid binary produce an Invalid UTF-8 error?
Eight-bit groups can represent bytes that are not valid UTF-8 text, such as an incomplete multibyte character. Set Invalid UTF-8 to Replace with to display replacement characters instead of stopping with an error.
Can I convert a decimal number to binary here?
This tool converts text characters, not numeric values. Entering 10 converts the characters “1” and “0”; converting the number ten to 1010 requires a number base converter.
Is my text uploaded or saved?
Conversion runs in your browser, and the tool does not upload or save your input. It remembers option settings and whether Character breakdown is open; site analytics receive tool events without your text.
