FAQ

Does hex to text use ASCII or UTF-8?

This tool uses UTF-8, which includes ASCII. ASCII characters use one byte, while é uses two and 😀 uses four. Open Character breakdown to inspect the code points and bytes for up to 200 characters.

Why do I get an odd number of hex digits error?

Each byte needs exactly two hex digits. Use 0A rather than A; the tool does not add missing zeros.

Why does my hex string show an invalid UTF-8 error?

Valid hex can still contain bytes that are not valid UTF-8 text. Show error reports the problem byte; Replace with keeps decoding and marks invalid sequences with . Other text encodings, such as Latin-1, are not supported.

Can I convert an MD5 or SHA-256 hash back to text?

A hash is not hex-encoded text and cannot be reversed with this converter. Its bytes will usually produce an invalid UTF-8 error.

Is my text uploaded or saved?

Conversion runs in your browser, and the tool does not upload or save your input. It saves option settings and whether Character breakdown is open. The page uses Google Analytics for tool events, but those events do not include your text.
