FAQ

Can I decode Base64 to an image or PDF file?

Paste the Base64 string or data URI. When the decoded bytes are not text, a binary panel shows the detected file type and a hex preview, with thumbnails for supported images. Click Download file to save the decoded bytes.

Is Base64 encryption?

Base64 is a reversible encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it without a key, so do not use it to protect secrets.

Can I decode Base64 without padding?

The decoder accepts missing = padding and extra = characters at the end, even with Strict decoding enabled. Padding followed by more data still causes an error.

Why do I get an invalid Base64 error?

Padding in the middle of the string or an invalid length causes an error. Strict decoding also rejects invalid characters and reports their line and column; with it off, those characters are skipped with a warning. Spaces, tabs and line breaks are accepted.

Is my text or file uploaded?

Encoding and decoding run locally in your browser; the tool does not upload or save your input, files or results. Option settings are saved locally, and Google Analytics receives tool events without your data.
