FAQ
Does a final line break add an empty line?
By default, a final line break does not add a line. Turn on Count trailing line break as a line to include the empty line after it.
Do wrapped lines count as extra lines?
Wrap long lines changes only the display, not the counts. Windows, Unix and old Mac line breaks are all recognized.
Can I use this to count rows in a CSV?
The tool counts text lines, including the header. It does not parse CSV, so a line break inside a quoted field starts another counted line.
How large a text file can I count?
Click Upload to select a text file up to 100 MB. Files over 5 MB are counted in the background without loading them into the text box; Show first 1,000 lines opens a read-only preview while the counts still cover the whole file. Unique and duplicate counts are unavailable above 5,000,000 lines.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
Counting happens in your browser, and the tool does not upload your text. Option settings are saved locally; quick links temporarily pass text to the next tool through sessionStorage in the same tab.
