FAQ

Can I start numbering at a different number or count down?

Set Start at to a whole number from -999999 to 999999999. Set Step to a whole number from -1000 to 1000, except 0; use a negative value to count down.

How do I skip blank lines?

Set Empty lines to Skip to leave blank lines in place without using up a number, or Remove to delete them. Blank lines, including whitespace-only lines, are numbered by default.

How do I renumber text that already has line numbers?

Select Remove numbers under Mode, then click Use as input and switch to Add numbers. Only the first leading marker on each line is removed; enable Also remove bare numbers (1 text) for entries such as "3 apples". Check the result before reusing it: a line starting with "12:30 Lunch" becomes "30 Lunch".

Can I use this to add line numbers in Word or Google Docs?

This tool inserts numbers into plain text, which you can copy into a document. It does not turn on Word or Google Docs line-numbering features.

Is my text uploaded or saved?

The text is processed in your browser without being uploaded, and the input text is not saved. Option settings are saved in localStorage; site analytics events contain the tool slug, not your text.
