Markdown (GitHub). Cells are separated by pipes, and the second line must be a separator such as | --- | --- |. Colons set the alignment: :-- left, :-: center, --: right. Write a literal pipe as \| and a line break inside a cell as <br>. Preview the table in a full document with the Markdown Viewer.
| Name | Score | | ----- | ----: | | Alice | 92 |
HTML. A <table> with the header row in <thead> as <th> cells and the data in <tbody>. Choose a CSS block for web pages or inline styles for e-mail, where <style> is often stripped.
<table> <thead><tr><th>Name</th><th>Score</th></tr></thead> <tbody><tr><td>Alice</td><td>92</td></tr></tbody> </table>
CSV / TSV. One row per line, fields separated by a comma, semicolon, tab or pipe. A field that contains the separator, a quote or a line break is wrapped in double quotes, and quotes inside it are doubled. Need JSON instead? Use CSV to JSON.
Name,Note Alice,"Admin, ""owner"""
LaTeX. A tabular environment: the column spec (l, c, r) sets alignment, & separates cells and \\ ends a row. The characters & % $ # _ { } ~ ^ \ must be escaped. The Booktabs style needs \usepackage{booktabs}; the other styles need no extra packages.
\begin{tabular}{|l|r|}
\hline
Name & Score \\
\hline
Alice & 92 \\
\hline
\end{tabular}
MediaWiki. The table starts with {| and ends with |}; |- starts a row, ! marks header cells and | data cells, with !! and || between cells on one line.
{| class="wikitable"
|-
! Name !! Score
|-
| Alice || 92
|}
Text. A plain-text table for code comments, README files and terminals: ASCII borders (+---+), Unicode box-drawing lines or a compact layout with columns separated by spaces. Wide characters such as Chinese or emoji count as two columns, so borders stay aligned.
+-------+-------+ | Name | Score | +-------+-------+ | Alice | 92 | +-------+-------+
FAQ
How do I make an HTML table for email?
In the HTML tab, set Styles to Inline (e-mail). This adds borders, padding and header styling as inline style attributes; preservation in Gmail and Outlook has not been tested.
Can I create a Markdown table without a header?
No. Markdown tables always use the first row as the header, even when First row is header is off. That setting only controls header treatment in the other output formats: HTML, MediaWiki, LaTeX and Text.
What happens to merged cells when I import an HTML table?
Merged cells are split into separate cells, with empty cells added for the extra rows or columns. The output does not preserve merged cells.
What are the table and file size limits?
Tables can contain up to 2,000 rows and 100 columns; extra rows or columns are cut during import or paste. Uploaded files must be 5 MB or smaller.
Is my table data uploaded or stored?
Table processing runs in your browser, and no table content is sent to the server. Your table is saved in this browser's local storage; Clear removes the saved table. The page uses Google Analytics for usage events, without table content.
