FAQ
How does the word counter count hyphenated words?
With Hyphenated words as one checked, a word such as well-known counts as one word. Uncheck it to count the parts separately. Punctuation and emoji do not count as words.
Does the character count include spaces?
Characters includes spaces, tabs and line breaks. Characters (no spaces) excludes all whitespace. An emoji sequence such as a family emoji counts as one character.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time uses the word count divided by Reading speed, with a default of 238 words per minute. Speaking time uses Speaking speed, which defaults to 150 words per minute. Both estimates are rounded to the nearest second.
Can I count words in a PDF or Word document?
PDF and DOCX uploads are not supported. Copy the document's text and paste it into the text box instead.
Is my text uploaded or saved?
Counting happens in your browser; the tool does not upload your text. Save draft in this browser is on by default and keeps your text in localStorage for your next visit, except for drafts longer than 5,242,880 characters. Turn it off or click Clear to delete the saved draft.
