FAQ
What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?
Use Component (encodeURIComponent) for a single query parameter value: it encodes separators such as &, =, and /. Use Full URL (encodeURI) for a whole URL: it preserves URL separators and existing valid %XX escapes.
Should URL spaces be encoded as %20 or +?
Component (encodeURIComponent) and Full URL (encodeURI) encode spaces as %20. Form data (+ for spaces) uses + instead. When decoding, turn off Treat + as space if you need literal plus signs preserved; %2B decodes to + either way.
What do %20, %3A, %26, and %3D mean in a URL?
They are percent-encoded characters: %20 is a space, %3A is a colon, %26 is an ampersand, and %3D is an equals sign.
Why do I get an invalid UTF-8 error when decoding?
The encoded bytes are not valid UTF-8 and may come from a different character set. Under Character set, choose the encoding used by the source, such as Windows-1251, ISO-8859-1, or Windows-1252.
Is my URL uploaded or opened?
Encoding and decoding run in your browser; the tool does not upload your input or open the URL. Your input is not saved, but option settings are stored locally. The page uses Google Analytics for tool events without including your text or URL.
