MD5 hashing (often called "MD5 encryption") is fine for checksums and cache keys, but not for security. For security-sensitive uses, use SHA-256 in the Hash Generator.
FAQ
Can I decrypt an MD5 hash?
MD5 is a one-way hash, not encryption. This tool cannot turn a hash back into the original text.
Why is my MD5 different from another tool's result?
A trailing line break changes the hash. For Whole text, check Line endings and Input encoding: UTF-8 hashes text, while Hex bytes and Base64 bytes hash decoded bytes.
How do I generate an MD5 checksum for a file?
Open the File tab and click Choose files, or drop files onto the drop zone. You can hash up to 20 files at a time, each up to 2 GB, then use Download checksums.md5 to save results in md5sum format.
Is my text or file uploaded?
Text, lists, keys and files are hashed in your browser; the tool does not upload them. Only your options are saved locally, and analytics events contain the tool slug, not your text, key or file name.
Can I generate HMAC-MD5?
Enter a valid key in Secret key (HMAC-MD5, RFC 2104) and set Key encoding to UTF-8 or Hex. This switches text, line and file results to HMAC-MD5.
