Should I use UUID v4 or v7?
Choose v4 for a random ID. Choose v7 for a time-ordered ID: it includes a Unix timestamp in milliseconds, and UUIDs generated in one batch are strictly increasing.
Are generated UUIDs guaranteed to be unique?
Random generation is not a uniqueness guarantee. Each v4 UUID contains 122 random bits supplied by crypto.getRandomValues.
How do I generate the same UUID from a name?
Select v5 under Version, choose a Namespace, and enter text in Name. The same name and namespace always produce the same UUID; an empty Name produces no output.
Can I get the creation time from a UUID?
Paste it into the Validate / decode a UUID field. The tool shows an embedded timestamp for v1, v6 and v7, but v4 has no timestamp to decode.
Are UUIDs generated on a server or stored?
UUIDs are generated in your browser, and the tool does not send the values anywhere. Generated UUIDs and the v5 name are not stored, but your form options are saved in localStorage.
