FAQ
How do I verify a downloaded file's SHA-256 checksum?
Select SHA-256, open the File tab and click Choose files. Paste the checksum from the download page into Expected hash to check for a match. You can also paste a full sha256sum line containing the checksum and filename.
Can I decrypt a SHA-256 hash?
A hash is a one-way fingerprint, not encryption. This tool computes hashes; it cannot turn a hash back into the original text.
Why does the same text produce a different hash?
Spaces and a trailing line break change the bytes being hashed. For multiline UTF-8 text, check Line endings: LF (\n) and CRLF (\r\n) produce different hashes.
Are my text, files or secret keys uploaded?
Hashing happens in your browser, and the tool does not upload your text, files or keys. Only algorithm, format and encoding options are saved locally. The page uses Google Analytics for usage events, without including your text, key or filename.
How large a file can I hash?
You can add up to 20 files at a time, each up to 4 GB. Text input is limited to 50 MB; use the File tab for larger inputs.
